Promising new colony sim Dawn Apart was announced this week, a sci-fi game inspired by Rimworld’s legacy (opens in a new tab) and Factorio (opens in a new tab) to create a game that simulates an expedition arriving to build automated factories on an alien world. The native aliens, of course, aren’t thrilled about this – and your colonists might not be either, after seeing how spoiled their new home is getting.
“In DAWN APART, you’ve been sent to the distant planet Aurora to mine resources, nurture a growing colony of fortune hunters, and defend it against the fierce native population. Meet the demanding quotas dictated by your contractor – or flip the script and start a rebellion against the greedy corporation operating your new home,” a statement from developer Industrial Technology and Witchcraft reads.
It’s cool to see a game that’s not just automation, but also a colony simulation. You will have living colonists who have routines and such to take care of alongside building a chain of factories.
The most interesting twist is that it’s inspired by the voxel destruction featured in Teardown (opens in a new tab), and it will count once you start shooting towns or getting native life terrorist attack. It will also have a lot to do with your goal of digging up the world to mine or even terraform it.
With very few exceptions, the team explains, the world will be made of voxels. Voxels that have physical properties and can explode. Wood will burn, stone will crumble and iron will break.

“For example,” the team explains, “if a shot from a laser gun hits a wood voxel, it should shatter and pass through it, causing other flammable voxels to ignite, while if it hits a very heavy metal, it could die and just visually heat up that voxel instead.”
Obviously, this is going to be a lot of work, but the team hopes to make the game’s destruction and automation “truly impressive” before its spring 2024 release.
Dawn Apart is developed by a new independent team, Industrial Technology and Witchcraft, based in Berlin, Germany. You can find Dawn Apart on Steam (opens in a new tab).
