EastEnders spoilers – Boss Chris Clenshaw explains Mick’s exit

EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders boss Chris Clenshaw has explained the reason for Mick Carter’s tragic exit.

Danny Dyer’s final scenes aired on the series’ highly anticipated Christmas Day episode, as Mick apparently drowned trying to rescue Linda from the water.

Dyer’s exit was confirmed earlier this year, but Clenshaw revealed how the actor stayed on the show longer in order to give Mick a proper Christmas ending.

Talk to digital spy and other media at a recent Christmas event, he said: “Mick Carter isn’t the kind of character that comes out in the back of a black cab, is he?

“I’m so grateful to Danny for staying a little longer and giving us a Christmas Day outing because what’s really important is that we give the audience great drama on Christmas Day and there’s nothing bigger than Mick’s release.”

Explaining the importance of bringing Mick and Linda together in the lead up to the tragedy, Clenshaw added: “I think it was really important that we brought them both together. If you know the story of these two characters, they are the love of each other’s life is in their DNA.

“What was a challenge for us was finding a way out of Mick while still keeping Linda, because Mick wouldn’t leave Linda and leave his kids, so it was incredibly difficult. We reconciled them , I think it’s a beautiful moment.”

He continued, “I was watching them shoot this scene, I have a stream in my office and I looked up and saw them kissing and I ran out of my office into the main office and I thought, ‘Mick and Linda are kissing!’

“It’s been so long since we’ve seen this. It’s beautiful and it takes you back to those years when they were so gorgeous and glorious. So even though it was one scene and two kisses, I think It’s a beautiful way to end their story and their journey. In the end, it’s a love story that ends tragically.

When asked if the public would get a conclusion regarding Mick’s fate, Clenshaw replied: You will have to wait and see. It is EastEnders so anything can happen.”

Dyer then added: “I read Boxing Day and it’s amazing, Kellie is amazing. I read the next one because I wanted to see how quickly people forget about her.

“Boxing Day is very different and it’s an amazing episode.”

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show is also streaming on BBC iPlayer.
