Tamriel rebuilt (opens in a new tab) is an ambitious mod project that aims to add the entire continent of Morrowind to The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind, which takes place on the large island of Vvardenfell. It has been in development for 20 years now. Last we heard from the team was via an updated dev roadmap in late 2021, but today the devs released a new update. (opens in a new tab) which adds two major new regions to the game world: Dominions of Dust and Embers of Empire.
Dust domains is centered on the House Hlaalhu trading port of Andothren, which lies southwest of Vvardenfell on the Inland Sea. The sparsely populated but dangerous borderlands west of Andothren are contested by Hlaalu and their rival, House Redoran. The region is also home to the peaks and valleys of the Velothi Mountains, once a stronghold of the long-extinct Dwemer, while the Ishanuran clan continues their nomadic ways in the Armun Ashlands to the south, an area devastated by the Red Mountain eruption.

Embers of the Empire is a complete overhaul of the western shore of the Telvanni Peninsula, and includes the last remaining symbols of Imperial power in what is Morrowind’s most hostile region: the settlements of Firewatch and Helnim, and the outpost of Nivalis on Althoa Island, one of the few surviving naval forts in the area.

Between them, Dominions of Dust and Embers of Empire add two new Ashlander clans and an joinable vampire clan called Orlukh, over 200 new or reworked quests, and offer a landmass triple the size of the Morrowind Bloodmoon expansion. There are also “several hundred bug fixes and consistency improvements to our old content, including major improvements to exteriors, interiors, and assets, as well as several new quests in our old zones.”
This map shows the location and scale of the new additions:
It’s a really impressive addition and the new towns look fantastic, but the work on the Tamriel Rebuilt mod is far from done: the number of quests in the mod is now roughly equivalent to Morrowind and of its expansions, but the development team said that only about half of the continent is currently playable. According to the updated roadmap (opens in a new tab) released in 2021, Dominions of Dust and Embers of Empire will be followed by Thirr Valley, a Hlaalu-dominated region southeast of the Dominion of Dust, the Sundered Scar region east of Old Ebonheart, and then the desert mountain region of Shipal – Shin just south of Thirr Valley.
So yes, all very ambitious, but after 20 years of work – and a lot to show for it – I have no doubt it will happen. The Tamriel Rebuilt mod, installation instructions and other support files can all be obtained at tamriel-rebuilt.org (opens in a new tab).
