Luxury market Lyst has released its Year in Fashion 2022 report, covering a series of celebrity-backed trends, fashion collaborations and cultural moments that have defined customer searches on its platform.
In the report’s introduction, the retailer said more than 200 million people had browsed and purchased from the site this year, giving it data to analyze what shaped fashion during the period.
Miu Miu tops the charts, alongside Diesel and Prada
Miu Miu came out on top as Lyst’s brand of the year after a period defined by the brand’s viral mini skirt. Other items, such as her ballerina flats and her Wander bag, have played in current Gen Z trends, such as “indie-sleaze” and balletcore, and have resulted in highly anticipated runway shows during weekday seasons of the fashion.
Meanwhile, Diesel was named ‘Logo of the Year’, a feat Lyst said it achieved after a major brand repositioning, push for sustainable denim and significant celebrity endorsements. According to the report, in June, his 1DR bag became the most requested accessory, with a 248% increase in searches.
Jacquemus and Nike’s highly sought-after partnership was awarded ‘Collab of the Year’, after searches for the brands increased 2,575% from first listing to release date, while Birkenstock’s Boston clogs won the “Shoe of the Year” and the Re-nylon from Prada. The reissue received the “Bag of the Year”.
Lyst named it a “Brand to Watch” as New York-based Luar, which it says saw demand increase 106% year-over-year. Known for its signature Ana bag, the brand recently won the 2022 CFDA American Accessory Designer of the Year award and already has a number of famous faces among its fan base.
Celebrity endorsements and modeling impact
The report repeatedly noted the undeniable impact of celebrities and influencers on fashion this year, many of whom are responsible for specific “viral” moments and trends.
Model and activist Bella Hadid was the source of several Lyst categories, including as “Power Dresser of the Year”. According to the report, by wearing a particular piece of clothing, Hadid influenced a 1,900% increase in searches for similar items, especially those that fell within the Y2k trend. Lyst credited the star to searches for corsets, up 70%, cargo pants, up 56%, and mini platform boots from Ugg, which within 24 hours of appearing on the model, saw searches increase by 152%.
Other categories Hadid appeared in included Lyst’s “viral moment of the year”, which was selected to be Coperni’s SS23 presentation of a dress spray influencing a 3,000% increase in research for the brand, and Balenciaga’s star-studded haute couture show, for which the 26-year-old model modeled. The event, which also featured Nicole Kidman and Dua Lipa, was enlivened by the brand’s vintage pieces and, after the show, influenced a search spike of 525% for “Balenciaga couture”.
Other celebrities highlighted in the report include actress Sydney Sweeney, Lyst’s “Rising Star of the Year” Kim Kardashian for her Met Gala Marilyn Monroe look, and the “Fashion Power Couple of the Year” Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker’s Dolce & Gabbana-sponsored wedding led to a 114% jump in searches for the Italian brand.
