A criminal investigation has reportedly resumed into ex-President Donald Trump’s involvement in payments to porn star Stormy Daniels in exchange for her keeping quiet about their alleged affair.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, newly headed by Alvin Bragg, is reviving its investigation into the silent payments to Daniels, sources familiar with the matter told The New York Times on Monday.

It is a $130,000 payment that former Trump personal attorney Michael Cohen made from his funds to Daniels before the 2016 presidential election. Trump and his family business, the Trump Organization , later repaid Cohen.

Cohen in 2018 pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations related to the silent payment and served a three-year prison sentence.

But the investigation into the payment and Trump’s ties to it have reached an impasse. The district attorney’s office instead began looking into Trump’s overall business practices.

It was only recently that Bragg informed his associates, at least one attorney and his supporters that he believed a case could be brought against Trump, according to the Times.

Prosecutors are pressuring the Trump Organization’s former chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg, to cooperate with the investigation to shed light, the newspaper reported. Weisselberg has first-hand knowledge of the payment to Daniels but resisted pressure to speak about it.

The report comes three days after Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a special counsel to oversee two criminal investigations into Trump.

Jack Smith, a veteran prosecutor, will review the Justice Department’s investigation into classified documents Trump brought with him to Mar-a-Lago after leaving the White House. Smith will also look at Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results and the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

The criminal investigation report into Trump and Daniels having a new life comes less than a week after Trump announced his 2024 presidential bid.
