PLAYER NOTES: Boulaye Dia and Famara Diedhiou lead Senegal to victory over Qatar

Senegal bounced back from their opening game loss to the Netherlands to beat Qatar 3-1 in Group A on Friday.

Boulaye Dia and Famara Diedhiou put the African champions into a two-goal lead but Qatar pulled one back – their first-ever World Cup goal – through Mohammed Muntari.

Senegal quickly allayed any concerns over a nervous finish, however, as Bamba Dieng made it 3-1 with six minutes remaining.

Qatar now look likely to pull out of the World Cup in the group stage, but Senegal will approach their last game against Ecuador with momentum behind them.

Sportsmail’s Kieran Gill and Sam Brookes rated all players on both sides.

Qatar (5-3-2)

Meshaal Barsham – Tried to get involved at every opportunity in the first half but his decision-making was weird at times. He was lucky enough to get away with a knock-down from a corner which caused Senegal to miss a good chance. 5

pedro miguel – Looked to advance more than he did against Ecuador but wasn’t able to produce much quality here. 5

Ismail Mohamad – Took a booking in the first half for a mediocre challenge. Struggled to keep Dia and Diedhiou at bay. 5

Boualem Khoukhi – Made a bad mistake for Dia’s goal, failing to clear his lines while under very little pressure. Responded well after the break, though. 5

Abdelkarim Hassan – Can’t fault his enthusiasm and he clearly imagined a goal. Sometimes pulled from everywhere, but did not find the net. 5

Hommam Ahmed – Made some decent crosses in the second half, but Sarr gave him a lot of problems on that flank as well. 5

Hassan Al Haidous – Had a quiet game and it was no surprise when he was taken off in the second half. 5

Karim Boudiaf – Unable to produce much quality in the middle of the park, especially in the first half as Senegal took control. 5

Assim Madibo – A combative midfielder and he earned a round of applause from Raven with a solid tackle from the start. Missed another challenge in the closing stages and was deservedly booked. 5

Almoez Ali – Came into the game more in the second half and forced Mendy into a good save. 6

Akram Afif – Looked most likely to score for Qatar so it was a slight surprise he didn’t score the goal. A spirited performance and perhaps he should have had a penalty in the first half. 6

Senegal (4-2-3-1)

Edouard Mendy – Made a great save to deny Mohamad in the second half. Had very little to do other than that. 6

Youssouf Sabali – Afif regularly stopped on his side of the pitch but he handled the Qatar striker well for the most part. 6

Kalidou Koulibaly – He seems more comfortable with a Senegal shirt than with Chelsea. A solid outing here for the centre-back. 6.5

Ismail Jakobs – Took a booking for a late challenge but wasn’t bothered by Qatar’s rare attacks. 6

Nampalys-Mendy – A laborious showcase in the middle of the park. Burst forward to have a late effort on goal, but he flew over the bar. 6

Idrissa Gana Gueye – Almost opened the scoring with a shot from the edge of the area that flew just wide. He looked better than in the opener as he played a bit deeper here. 6.5
