Pokémon Scarlet and Violet players are trying to get refunds

Pokemon Scarlet and PurpleGame Freak’s new monster-collecting RPGs, have been trailing since their November 18 launch for objectively terrible technical performance which is eclipsed only by huge number of pips. (At least one bug is good: it makes it easier for you to hunt shiny Pokemon). Both of these games were clearly not ready for prime time, and now some gamers are asking Nintendo for refunds.

Scarlet and Purple had a janky-ass launch. Among the shortcomings are sluggish frame rates, awful graphical pop-ups, and characters and monsters cutting into each other. Even Pokéballs create special problems, like making the scenery disappear or derailing the camera. The flaws are seemingly endless, impacting gameplay so much that Scarlet and Purple became the lowest-rated games in the series. On Reddit, buyers request a refund for their digital purchases since the games officially launched on Friday, November 18. What’s more, there are many who claim success.

“I received a refund from Violet’s eshop last night after feeling the game was not in an acceptable condition for a AAA release”, Redditor Hotdog_Daddy posted to r/Pokémon on Nov 20. “The representative actually told me that given the situation regarding the condition of Pokemon S/V she would elevate my case to make sure the refund was approved. It was approved an hour later.

“Welcome to the Refund Team”, came an answer. “Honestly, it sucks to have to do this. But we’re actually potentially getting a decent reaction. Maybe we’ll get a decent patch and updates, in which case I’ll buy the game from occasion. Until then, never [I] buy a new one Pokemon game unless it’s actually AAA level.

In another post, user Jaded_Goth garnered thousands of upvotes saying, “Refunded. I won’t be part of the problem anymore. […] There will be many people who will defend this franchise until the day they die. But could you honestly watch this game and tell me it was their best effort? The FPS and graphics made me check if I was accidentally playing on a toaster. They somehow managed to remove so many cool features and quality of life things like showing status animations, decisions with experience sharing, disabling combat animations I might Continue.

They concluded: “Since I complained about the state of this game, I can no longer be part of this problem. I got my money back and I feel much better.

In these and one fair little other sonvarious Redditors share their own experiences trying to get refunds from Nintendo. Many claim success, but some say Nintendo’s customer support needs a few tweaks before accepting a refund.

Kotaku contacted Nintendo for comment, but could not independently confirm details of refunds issued.

Pokemon Scarlet and Purple is the latest entry in the series, and while buggy as hell, the games at least introduce new monsters to collect. This includes a cute murderous ghost dog, a mascot resembling Apple Jacksand a yassified peacock. Maybe future patches will make the game around them easier to enjoy. We can hope, right?
