Police launch murder investigation after Christmas Eve shooting in Merseyside | liverpool

Police have opened a murder investigation after a woman was shot dead in a pub on Christmas Eve in Wallasey, where she was celebrating the holiday season with family and friends.

Merseyside Police are appealing for information after the shooter fled in a dark vehicle, believed to be a Mercedes, following the incident, which they say took place at a ‘busy place full young people” and injured a number of other people.

DS Sue Coombs said: ‘Tragically the victim, a 26-year-old woman, had suffered a serious gunshot wound to the head.

“She was taken to Arrowe Park Hospital but sadly died shortly afterwards. His family has been informed and today, which should be a day of celebration among friends, they come to terms with this tragic loss.

“We are only at the very beginning of the investigation, but we do not believe that the victim in this case was targeted. She was enjoying Christmas with her sister and her friends at what should have been a peaceful time.

“What his family is currently going through is incomprehensible. At this stage of the investigation, we are trying to establish the motive and the circumstances surrounding this merciless shooting.

Police said officers were called to the Wallasey Village lighthouse around 11.50pm on Saturday after reports of gunfire.

Three men were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds and a number of other people were also injured, police added. A 28-year-old man is said to be hospitalized in critical condition.

Local resident Jenny Hough, 77, who heard gunshots, said she assumed they were Christmas fireworks, adding the shooting was a “complete shock”.

“My sister’s garden had been broken into,” she said. “We suspect it’s people trying to get out of the pub and trying to climb over the wall and into his garden to get out.”

A spokesman for the Lighthouse pub said the shooting was “a tragedy beyond words”. “All of our thoughts are with the friends and family of our clients, and in particular our thoughts are with the family of our client who lost her life,” they said.

The spokesman added that the pub had given CCTV footage to the police.

Dame Angela Eagle, MP for Wallasey, said the incident was ‘heartbreaking’ and called on anyone with information to contact the police.

Wirral council leader Janette Williamson said the shooting was “nothing short of despicable”.

Jeffrey Hughes, minister of the United Reformed Church of Wallasey Village, said the lighthouse was “at the center” of the community and news of the shooting was met with “shock”.

“When we first learned this morning there had been a shooting in Wallasey, Wallasey Village is the last place you would think of,” he added.

DS David McCaughrean said: ‘This is a truly shocking and devastating incident which happened just before Christmas Day in a busy venue full of young people.

“We believe the shooter left the pub car park in a dark colored vehicle – possibly a dark colored Mercedes – shortly after the shooting and would like anyone who saw him to contact us immediately.”

Police have asked witnesses with images and/or information to contact them.
