The launch of World of Warcraft: Dragonflight was a test of endurance

Hello players. While you slept, tens of thousands of people fought their way through struggling servers when World of Warcraft: Dragonflight launched. More than an hour after the official release, many have found themselves unable to travel to the new continent of content.

“Cba with that dog shit,” Mogoqt the Warrior wrote. An hour after launch and with a lucky few sprinting ahead and having fun, they were stuck on the outskirts of Orgrimmar, writing their thoughts to an unconcerned group of other players in the same boat.

They continued: “Yup, an hour has passed. No wonder people don’t play the game once behind. Gg. Although their salty tirade went unanswered, they were not alone. Due to the intense number of players wanting to stay up late and trying to get to the same place at the same time, the servers were plagued with lag. Boarding the zeppelin from Stormwind or Orgrimmar resulted in lengthy loading screens, most of which simply dropped players into a graveyard near their starting point.

To the developers’ credit, gimped airships and sunken ships were bypassed with a portal to Dragon Island in both Orgrimmar and Stormwind. Unfortunately, this did not solve the problem. Clicking on this portal would also result in a short loading screen, which would take you nowhere. Sprinkle in all those occasional disconnects and you had a pretty tough sundae by all accounts.

But, WoW players are nothing but persistent, with many staying and continually clicking on the portal in hopes that their luck would change. I was among them, KFC long cold and Pepsi bottle bone dry. A tragedy.

However, it had its advantages. The rare but natural mount ball became bloated and extremely troublesome while the portal was broken. This is a formation of players all huddled around a single location atop their tallest mount, requiring players to hunt pixels for the portal below. A serious problem, made worse by a handful of impostors being known and using toys that bloated their size when mounted, making clicking through the portal a frustrating undertaking.

You don’t see this every day in World of Warcraft.

“How many times are we ready to be hurt? wrote Dotdotfear the Warlock, among the montage ball 70 minutes after launch. The WoW expansion launch was an uphill battle for a long time, with the recent memory of the Lich King Classic in their minds, and the Warlord of Draenor day one experience etched in their souls. We mourn the players who go to bed early and salute those who still fight until morning.
