TV shows that had a significant influence on fashion

They create and break trends and influence our outfits like never before. And we’re not talking about luxury brands or Kim Kardashian, but television shows, which have become major sources of inspiration. In fact, within a few months, Euphoria — the most influential fashion show of the year — managed to make the Y2K aesthetic more desirable than ever.

Some TV shows are inseparable from fashion. Gossip Girl and sex and the city have proven it time and time again, successfully propelling a brand or creator to dizzying heights of popularity in a single episode. But in recent years, the influence of TV shows on the fashion world has surpassed anything we’ve seen before. dramas like squid game or Lupine, with plots far removed from fashion folklore, have managed to become true trendsetters. This phenomenon has transformed simple fictional characters into major fashion influencers.

TV shows that managed to become fashion trendsetters

The return of the year 2000

On this front, Euphoria – the drama starring Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Alexa Demie and Barbie Ferreira – now reigns supreme, as the most influential fashion TV series of 2022. A study conducted by the fast-fashion brand Boohoo* reports no less than 132,900 monthly searches worldwide associating the series with fashion. These numbers are impressive, especially since the second season of the show aired in the very beginning of 2022. The study also shows that the term “Euphoria outfits” was searched for an average of 121,000 times per month, more than all other Top 10 TV series combined.

While all the stars of the show are now considered fashion icons, note that Alexa Demie — aka Maddy Perez — particularly stood out this year by contributing greatly to the year 2000 revival underway in our wardrobes. dresses. From low-rise pants and crop tops to butterfly accessories, scarves and even overalls, countless fashion pieces seen on the show made their way into wardrobes throughout the year, fueled long after the show was aired by icons such as Hailey Bieber and Bella Hadid. Suffice to say how much these television shows influence fashion, and in particular via social networks – and therefore the younger generations.

French chic

Although far behind Euphoria, Emily in Paris – the third season of which lands December 21 on Netflix – is also trending, with no less than 39,900 monthly global searches for terms related to the show’s fashion pieces. This success has clearly contributed to making French chic known – even if it is a bit caricatural in the romantic comedy show – by making it in turn one of the major fashion trends of this year. The beret, blazers, high boots and leopard print coats are among the pieces boosted by the series.

The rest of the ranking includes stranger things (28,800 monthly searches), which revived a certain nostalgia for 1980s fashion, Peaky Blinders (18,200) and Bridgerton (14,400), which gave rise to unexpected trends, such as corsets or long gloves. And while these haven’t hit the streets yet, they’re all over social media.

Note that “Euphoria” is also flagged as the show that had the biggest influence on fashion. However, this result should be approached with caution, as series like Gossip Girl and sex and the city – which aired in the late 1990s and early 2000s – did not benefit at the time from the analysis of this type of search data on platforms like Google. It is therefore difficult to determine which drama has really been the most influential of all time on the fashion world.

* The study, conducted by fashion experts Boohoo, focused on analyzing Google search data for various fashion and outfit-related search terms for every new and recurring TV series released in 2022 to to reveal the hottest TV series of the year and of all time.
