If you can believe it, it’s been six years since Netflix released the standalone Gilmore Girls sequel titled Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, and fans are still clamoring for another season (or two) but will that ever happen? Here is the truth of what was said.
Debuting nearly 10 years after the mothership series aired on The WB, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life was Netflix’s beloved follow-up miniseries that saw the majority of the cast return for a four-episode event.
Since the release of this miniseries, the series has again been discontinued, and it has now been over 6 years since the miniseries arrived on Netflix.
Over the years we’ve had to debunk rumors and speculation from fake news sites that Netflix would get a season 2. They usually came every November, with the most viral coming in 2021, coinciding with the first season of the limited series being added to Netflix in 2016.
What the cast and showrunner said about Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life season 2?
Back in 2017, that was when talk of renewing Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life season 2 was most widespread, but hopes were dashed when Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel said it there were no immediate plans to return to the characters.
Amy Sherman-Palladino spoke to Vanity Fair in 2018 about any lawsuit saying:
“It’s still a possibility. Everyone has been very busy. Alexis [Bledel] is clearly very busy! It would have to be the right story and the right time. It took a lot to put it together the first time.
In 2021, hopes were dashed again with Kelly Bishop (who plays Emily Gilmore) declaring it’s “very unlikely” the show would return saying she would like to reprise the role but added:
“But we’ve kind of already done that, with these four extra episodes. And I honestly think it’s very unlikely that this kind of situation can be brought together because so many important players, they’ve all gone down different paths and have other projects and other things to do. It should be like a continuation of those four more episodes, but I just don’t see that happening. And I don’t see Amy having any interest in it, because Mrs. Maisel is a huge hit and rightly so. I just don’t see her wanting to go back and go back to it. We all loved it, and there might be an opportunity, but it doesn’t seem too likely. But of course, I would play it again. I would love.”
The closest we’ve come to talking about a potential revival came from a late 2022 interview with Lauren Graham on New Beauty. Straight and straight to the point, the magazine asked if Gilmore Girls will come back again.
Here is the full answer provided by Graham:
“I’m making plans to see Amy [Sherman-Palladino], the show’s creator, in the coming weeks. It’s always a fun prospect to think about and discuss. It used to be more about talking, but now that we’ve done it, we know it’s possible. I think I feel such a responsibility and so much love for the story that I just wish it was the right time.
Netflix does not own Gilmore Girls Licence
We must add that Netflix will not retain Gilmore Girls forever and does not own the underlying rights.
As we have discussed, the main Gilmore Girls The series is currently licensed to Netflix worldwide until 2026.
Likewise, we can reveal here that the sequel to the Netflix Original series is also set to stay on Netflix until 2026 (10 years after its initial license).
What could happen is that they wait for a revival when the rights revert to Warner Brothers Television and produce an exclusive season for HBO Max, but that’s just one option.
In conclusion, it will be up to Netflix and Warner Bros. Television to deal with any Netflix revival, but nothing is set in stone aside from the occasional tease.
