Xbox Game Pass subscribers are way ahead of PS Plus tiers, Sony says in latest attempt to go small

Do you think Sony is new PlayStation Plus is the configuration correct? Do you think dividing the tiers into Essential, Extra and Premium was a wise move by Sony’s tacticians? Well, your thoughts aside, it seems the public reaction to the new subscription service hasn’t quite had the impact Sony was hoping for.

What is PS Plus and its new levels then? Why should you care?

As part of a new development in the messy investigation into whether Microsoft should be allowed to acquire Activsion Blizzard, the UK Competition and Markets Authority has released Sony’s response to the Statement of Issues of authority, and she revealed a lot of important information about subscription weapons. race in which the two platform carriers are engaged.

“Game Pass leads PlayStation Plus significantly,” Sony wrote in its response to the CMA. “Microsoft already has a substantial lead in multi-game subscription services. Game Pass has 29 million Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate console subscribers, and is expected to grow significantly in the future. PlayStation Plus multi-game subscription significantly delay [behind the numbers for Xbox Game Pass.]”

It’s worth noting that the last official numbers we heard from Microsoft about Game Pass suggested the service was at 25 million subscribers – and that was in January of this year. So that means the service added 4 million more members in less than 12 months. Given that it’s “expected to grow significantly in the future”, you can also see why Sony is looking at it with caution.

Will Xbox Game Pass continue to dominate Sony’s alternative?

Earlier this year we heard that PSN passed 100 million users, which means there are a lot of people attached to PlayStation’s online infrastructure who aren’t necessarily PS subscribers. More.

Data presented in Sony’s November 2022 earnings presentation revealed that the number of people subscribing to Sony’s PlayStation Plus fell from 47.3 million to 45.4 million this quarter. So that’s still more than the number of gamers who are undersubscribed to Xbox Game Pass – but Sony’s top-tier subscriber numbers must therefore be much lower than you’d previously expect from those numbers.

Sony only recently revealed its PS Plus subscription numbers.

So what is Sony’s goal? It’s likely to be about converting as many people already included in the PlayStation ecosystem into PS Plus subscribers, at the highest possible level. Whether we’ll see the company add more content, more discounts, or something else entirely with the intent of causing this remains to be seen.

I for one am still waiting for more PS1 games to be added to the service as promised before upgrading my subscription from Extra to Premium.
