Zooey Deschanel shares throwback photo of Elf

Elf Star Zooey Deschanel has shared a sweet little throwback to the iconic Christmas movie that fans will no doubt love.

Deschanel played Jovie in the 2003 party film directed by Jon Favreau. Jovie is an unenthusiastic staff member at Gimbels who is forced to dress up as an elf in the Christmas department and put up decorations.

She doesn’t like Christmas at first, but Will Ferrell’s Buddy reignites her passion for Christmas as the two spark a romance. At one point in the film, however, Gimbels’ manager and Jovie’s boss (Faizon Love), makes a request of Jovie.

He asks her to wrap six-inch ribbons to add to the department store’s already extravagant Christmas decorations. Deschanel put up a fun reference to that moment in an Instagram post with two images of her in the movie in that scene.

Deschanel captioned the post, “When he asks for 6 inch ribbon loops…(that’s impossible).”

Elf returned to our screens in two unexpected ways this year. First, Asda used Will Ferrell’s Buddy in its Christmas ad this year, while another Christmas movie referenced Elf.

Fiery, which stars Will Ferrell as the Christmas Present Ghost, presents Buddy the Elf with a disposable gag. The director of this film, Sean Anders, said: “I was not comfortable putting a Elf character in there without [Ferrell’s permission].”

“And before we could even suggest that, Will was like, ‘Well, shouldn’t there be, you know, since the movie is set in a world where A Christmas Carol exists, we might as well have this reference to Elf‘” Anders said.

“And so that was ultimately Will’s idea. And it’s a huge laugh every time you see him with an audience and a lot of fun to reference!”

Elf is now available to watch on Sky Cinema and Amazon Prime Video.
